If your family’s financial status has changed since you filed your FAFSA or if you had an expense that was not considered as part of the FAFSA, you may be able to file a special circumstance appeal.

If you do not meet the federal criteria for independent status on your FAFSA but feel you have unusual circumstances and should be considered independent, you can complete a dependency status appeal. If you were approved for a dependency status override during a previous aid year, request a renewal instead.
The following do not count as unusual circumstances that will qualify you for an appeal:
- Your parents refuse to contribute to your education.
- Your parents are unwilling to provide information on the FAFSA or for verification.
- Your parents do not claim you as a dependent for income tax purposes.
- You live independently, financially support yourself and demonstrate self-sufficiency.
To be considered for an approved appeal, you must show that your student-parent relationship is beyond repair or that there are unusual, extenuating circumstances that show you should be classified as an independent student.

Dependency Status Appeal Forms
Dependency status appeals for 2023-24 may be completed electronically or by submitting a copy of the appeal form and supporting documentation. See below for a link to access PDF versions of the appeal forms.
All IU East students are required to make satisfactory academic progress (SAP) in an eligible degree or certificate program to be eligible for financial aid. If our review of your academic progress shows that you do not meet SAP requirements, you'll receive a notification email at your IU email address.
To help complete your appeal, you should work with your academic advisor in order to develop an academic plan for the upcoming academic year that will enable you to meet the minimum SAP requirements.
A complete SAP appeal includes the following components:
- A typed statement explaining the circumstances that contributed to your unsatisfactory academic progress during all periods of enrollment regardless of whether or not you received financial aid for those terms. Your statement should include any behavioral modifications you have made or will be making to ensure you can be academically successful in the future.
- Documentation supporting your statement, which may include:
- For a medical condition: a physician’s (or health care provider’s) statement confirming your condition and that they support your decision to continue your enrollment.
- For the death of family member: a copy of the death certificate or obituary.
- For a divorce or separation: a court document or statement from the student/parent.
- For military service: official military orders.
- Additional information as requested, which may include midterm grades
- Your completed online appeal form, including information from your advisor when necessary.
The Office of Financial Aid SAP Committee will review your appeal. Decisions are made after careful evaluation of your unique circumstances, Federal Title IV regulations, and IU East guidelines. You’ll be notified of our decision and next steps at your IU email account. You can expect a decision within 15 business days. During this time, you’re responsible for any tuition and fees (including late fees) that are charged to your account.
Submitting an academic progress appeal does not guarantee approval or aid eligibility. All completed SAP appeals must be received by the office at least 30 days before the end of the semester you are appealing for.

If your appeal is denied
You must reestablish your eligibility to receive financial aid. Check your email for additional information. If your appeal was denied due to completion rate or GPA issues, you may become eligible by taking classes and paying for them on your own in order to meet minimum SAP requirements.
Federal regulation allows students who have parents that refuse to complete the FAFSA and refuse to provide support to the student to receive an Unsubsidized Direct loan. These students will remain a dependent student for financial aid purposes.
