Proposal & budget

Making your case for funding

Once you've selected the funding opportunity you'd like to apply for, you'll need to prepare a thorough and persuasive proposal and budget. Your first conversation should be with the Office of Academic Affairs; let them know what you're applying for and you'll be able to rely on them for:

  • advice and timeline suggestions,
  • guidance on meeting IU, federal, and state compliance requirements,
  • hands-on assistance and review of your proposal,
  • information about additional support available from IU,
  • and much more.

Budget preparation

Budgets are critical components of any proposal because it provides insight into project management as well as defining the amount of funding necessary to conduct the project. A proposal reviewer can determine a great deal about a project based on a budget. Budgets are generally one of the review components and can help or hinder the final outcome of your proposal review.

Your budget must be reviewed and approved prior to submission.

The IU Research website provides:

  • budget preparation recommendations,
  • sample budgets,
  • IU Rates,
  • cost sharing information,
  • and more.
