Sabbatical leave

The IU Sabbatical Leave Policy is the best resource to understand your eligibility and requirements; key points include:

  • A sabbatical leave is designed to provide time for such scholarly research and creative activity and associated travel and to allow faculty to keep abreast of developments in their fields of service to the university.
  • An academic appointee is eligible to apply for one sabbatical leave for each period of seven years’ full-time service in faculty rank following the completion of the first six years of full-time service at Indiana University.
  • Sabbatical leave cannot be taken if the appointee intends to retire or resign at the end of the year for which sabbatical is requested.

At IU East, applications for sabbatical leaves for a given academic year, whether for the full-year or for one semester, are submitted and reviewed during the preceding fall semester.

Faculty members who are granted a sabbatical are required to provide a written report of the activities undertaken during the sabbatical leave and to give a presentation on their sabbatical work at the Faculty Scholarship Celebration during the academic year that follows the leave.
